Post-Skate Nutrition: How Goaltenders Should Refuel After Games and Practices
To bounce back for the next practice or game, a goaltender’s post-ice nutrition strategy must focus on three core pillars: Rehydrate, Refuel, and Repair.

1. Rehydrate: The Immediate Priority
Because of the heavy gear, goalies lose a significant amount of water and essential electrolytes (like sodium and potassium) through sweat. Dehydration directly impairs reaction times and tracking ability—two things a goalie cannot afford to lose.
-
The 30-Minute Rule: Start sipping fluids immediately after stepping off the ice.
-
The Goalie Drink: Plain water isn't enough to replace heavy sweat loss. Opt for a sports drink containing electrolytes, or drink a glass of water paired with a salty snack (like pretzels).
-
The Scale Trick: If you want to be precise, weigh yourself before and after a hard practice. Drink 20–24 ounces of fluid for every pound of body weight lost during the session.

2. Refuel: Restoring Mind and Muscle Power
Ice hockey is a highly glycolytic sport, meaning your body rapidly burns through carbohydrates for energy. Even though goalies aren't skating lines, holding deep crouches and making explosive lateral pushes drains muscle glycogen stores. Furthermore, carbohydrates are the primary fuel for your brain, keeping your focus sharp.
-
The Window: Your muscles are most receptive to restocking energy within 30 to 45 minutes after exercise.
-
Quick Carbs: If you can't eat a full meal right away, grab a quick carb boost like a banana, a granola bar, or even chocolate milk.

3. Repair: Rebuilding Muscle
The constant up-and-down of butterfly transitions, deep lunges, and structural saves causes micro-tears in the muscles (especially the quads, groin, and core). Protein is essential to repair this tissue so you aren't plagued by deep soreness the next day.
-
The Target: Aim for 20 to 40 grams of high-quality protein shortly after hitting the showers.
-
The Sources: Lean meats (chicken, turkey), eggs, Greek yogurt, or a fast-absorbing whey protein shake are perfect options.
